MacBook Screen Repair: Parts, Timing & What to Bring
BLOGS AND NEWS | September 7, 2026

A cracked MacBook screen does not always mean replacing the whole computer. Before ordering a display, identify the exact model and check whether the damage also affects the hinges, enclosure, or other components. The part must match the laptop, not just its screen size.

What are you seeing?

Choose the closest match to find your next step.

There are cracks, lines, or dark patches

Record the symptoms and exact MacBook model so the correct display can be checked. Go to the steps.

The screen is black, but the Mac seems to run

A black screen has several possible causes. Mention startup sounds and any external-display test. Go to the steps.

I need to plan around the repair

Parts ordering and installation are separate: a part may arrive the next day or in 2–5 days; repair takes about three hours after it arrives. Go to the steps.

Tell us what the screen is doing

  • Visible cracks, lines, dark patches, flickering, or missing sections of the image.
  • A black built-in display even though the Mac makes sounds or appears to start.
  • An image that changes when the lid moves.
  • Any recent drop, liquid exposure, or pressure on the lid.

These symptoms help guide an inspection, but they do not all prove that a screen replacement is the right repair. A black display without visible damage can have more than one cause.

Find the model before requesting a part

  1. 1. Identify the MacOpen Apple menu → About This Mac if the screen is usable.
  2. 2. Record the symptomsNote cracks, lines, flicker, black areas, and any drop or liquid exposure.
  3. 3. Prepare for serviceBack up accessible files and ask about the correct part and its arrival date.

If the Mac is usable, open the Apple menu and About This Mac. Note whether it is a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, along with the model information shown. If the screen is unusable, bring the laptop so we can identify it from the device information.

Provide the exact model rather than only saying “13-inch MacBook.” Intel and Apple silicon generations, sizes, and display assemblies differ. Photos of the damage can help explain the symptom, but model details are needed to check the correct part.

Parts arrival and repair time are separate

MacBook and laptop screens often need to be ordered. We can commonly obtain the part the next day or within 2–5 days, depending on the model and availability. Once the required part arrives, the repair typically takes about three hours.

Ask for the expected part-arrival date and repair time together. Additional damage or a different fault can change the plan. A three-hour installation estimate does not mean every screen repair can be completed three hours after the laptop is dropped off.

Prepare your files before service

Back up the Mac if it can be used safely. A screen replacement does not normally require erasing storage, but a current backup is still useful before any repair. Apple’s Time Machine can back up the Mac to suitable external storage.

A compatible external display may allow temporary access if the Mac is otherwise working; supported connections depend on the model. Do not force the lid or keep using the laptop if the enclosure is bulging or the battery may be swollen.

What about Windows laptop screens?

iProtech also repairs screens on supported non-Apple laptops. Provide the manufacturer and full model number, plus whether the display is touch-enabled. Screen size alone is not enough to choose a compatible part.

Our MacBook and laptop repair page also covers supported storage upgrades, cleaning, Windows reinstallation, and password-reset assistance for your own laptop. Describe the main problem so we can confirm the appropriate service.

Frequently asked questions

Can you order a screen before I visit?

Contact us with the exact model and symptom first. We will confirm the part and whether an inspection is needed before ordering.

Will replacing the screen remove my files?

Screen replacement does not normally erase storage. Back up when possible and tell us if important files are not saved elsewhere.

Is every MacBook screen interchangeable?

No. The display must match the specific MacBook model and generation. Confirm the device details before ordering a replacement.
