A phone can become warm during navigation, gaming, a large update, or charging. A temperature warning, repeated shutdown, or unusual heat during light use deserves closer attention. Heat alone does not prove that the battery needs replacing.
What are you seeing?
Choose the closest match to find your next step.
It is hot right now
Disconnect charging, stop demanding tasks, and move it out of direct sun. Let it cool naturally. Go to the steps.
It heats up while charging
Record which charger and conditions trigger it. Charging can pause to protect a warm device. Go to the steps.
It gets hot while sitting unused
Note recent changes, battery drain, and warning messages. Repeated unexplained heat needs assessment. Go to the steps.
If the phone is too hot
Stop the demanding activity, unplug the charger, and move the phone out of direct sunlight to a cooler, ventilated place. Let it cool before using or charging it again. Do not use a refrigerator, freezer, water, or ice to force it cold.
If the case is bulging, the screen is lifting, or there is an unusual smell, stop using and charging the device and arrange an inspection. Do not press a lifted screen back into place.
Look for a repeatable pattern
- Heat during gaming or navigation: compare what happens after ending the activity and moving out of sunlight.
- Heat only while charging: inspect the cable and adapter for damage and use compatible, standards-compliant accessories.
- Heat after an update or setup: some background work is expected, but persistent problems after it finishes deserve investigation.
- Heat during light use: check battery-usage information and note whether one app is associated with the issue.
Charging pauses can be protective
iPhone and Pixel devices can limit functions or charging when temperature becomes excessive. A charging pause during a temperature warning is not, by itself, proof of a failed port. Let the device return to a normal temperature before troubleshooting the connection.
If the cable will not fit securely even when the phone is cool, see our charging and port-cleaning guide.
When to bring the phone in
Arrange an assessment if the phone repeatedly shuts down, becomes unusually hot with little use, drains rapidly, or develops problems after a drop or liquid exposure. Note the app, charger, and activity involved so the technician can reproduce the symptom.
The appropriate repair may involve a battery or another fault. A software update, battery replacement, and charging-port repair are not interchangeable solutions, so diagnosis comes before choosing a part.
Frequently asked questions
Is warmth while charging always a fault?
No. Some warmth can be normal. Temperature warnings, repeated shutdowns, or unusual heat with damaged hardware require attention.
Should I replace the battery immediately?
Not based on heat alone. The battery, charging equipment, workload, and other hardware can contribute; an assessment helps identify the cause.
