Unwanted ads on an Android phone can come from a website notification, a browser pop-up, or an installed app. The place where the ad appears is the best starting clue. You do not need to begin with a factory reset.

Ads appear only inside Chrome
Start with pop-up settings. If the messages appear as notifications, check the website permission separately. Go to the steps.
Ads appear over other apps or the home screen
A downloaded app may be involved. Note when the problem started and use the safe-mode check below. Go to the steps.
A warning says I must call or pay immediately
Do not use contact details or download links in the warning. Close it and check the source before taking action. Go to the steps.
Before you start
Close unexpected warnings rather than tapping their install or payment buttons. Note whether the ad appears in Chrome, in the notification area, or over other apps. Take a screenshot if it will help explain the problem, but keep personal information out of anything you share publicly.
Block browser pop-ups
- 1. Open Chrome settingsTap the three-dot menu, then Settings.

- 3. Block new pop-upsTurn off Pop-ups and redirects, then test the page again.
In Chrome on Android, follow these settings. This controls browser pop-ups; it does not remove an app that displays ads elsewhere.
Turn off unwanted website notifications
If Chrome identifies a site as the source, check that site’s permission. Open its page in Chrome, select the site-information icon beside the address, then Permissions and Notifications. Disable its notifications. Menu names can vary, and you may not see Notifications if the site has no permission.
Check recently installed apps
Did the ads start after installing a new app? Safe mode can help test whether downloaded apps are involved. The steps to enter it depend on your phone; use your manufacturer’s instructions. Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps, so compare whether the problem appears there.
If the ads stop in safe mode, remove recently installed, unneeded apps one at a time, restarting normally and checking after each removal. Keep a list so you can restore unrelated apps later. Save any important local app data before uninstalling. If the problem continues in safe mode, do not assume you have identified the cause.
Run a Play Protect check
Open Google Play Store, select your profile, and open Play Protect. Review its findings and keep app scanning enabled in its settings. An unfamiliar warning in a browser tab is different from a finding shown inside Play Protect.

When to get help
Bring the phone in if the ads prevent you from using Settings, you cannot identify the source, or you are unsure what can be removed. Show when and where an ad appears and mention anything you installed shortly before it started. Make a checked backup before any reset is considered.
Frequently asked questions
Does every pop-up mean the phone has a virus?
No. Website notifications, normal in-app advertising, and unwanted software can look similar. Identify the source before choosing a fix.
Will blocking Chrome pop-ups stop every ad?
No. It does not control all advertising inside other apps. Website notifications also have their own permissions.
